In January, four Dutchmen contested the Dakar Classic with matching Audi S1 Quattros. Three months later, the cars will come back to life when they participate in Crazy Cross Bergeijk on April 19–20.
Crazy Cross Bergeijk is a Dutch festival in which participants try to navigate a winding obstacle course on vehicles of all kinds. They can range from actual race cars like the Quattros to gag machinery like a cardboard tank atop a station wagon and a motorized casino slot machine, the latter two being the top finishers in the Crazy class in 2024.
Erik Van Loon, winner of the Dakar Classic’s H4 class in the Quattro, will drive it again in Bergeijk. His wife Anja, who raced the Dakar Rally in the Truck class, will take part in a car. Their daughters Noor, Loekie, and Imke are taking part as well; Noor and Imke will share a UTV while Loekie is on a quad.
“It’s super fun to do this as a family,” Erik said. “It’s close by, and it’s just a fun day out. As a father, it makes you extra proud to see your daughters driving and having fun. Of course, it’s super exciting to drive the Audi again. Our main goal is to make it a fun day for the five of us, and hopefully it’ll be nice and busy.
“All four Audi S1 Quattros from the Dutch Quattro Legends will be at the start. There was a lot of interest in these cars during the Dakar Classic, so it’s great that we can now showcase them all here in the Netherlands.”
Van Loon won the H4 category in his Dakar Classic debut and was 31st overall, though he is no stranger to Dakar as he ran the main rally 13 times. Still, he expects 2025 to be his final time racing at Dakar before switching to supporting Anja at future editions.
The other three Audis were the only other entrants in H4. Peter van den Bosch, who last raced Dakar in a truck in 2015, swas second and 53rd among all cars. 2007 Dakar truck winner Hans Stacey was third in class (57th overall) in his Audi followed by Frits van Eerd (62nd), the 2021 FIA World Endurance Champion in LMP2 Pro-Am and a businessman.
The quartet’s Audis were built by Auto Sport Veghel, a Dutch company that specializes in building Group B-style Quattros.
