The last time Robby Gordon wasn’t the Stadium Super Trucks’ fastest qualifier at Long Beach, COVID-19 didn’t exist and Matt Brabham was only a one-time series champion.
Now with three SST titles to his name, Brabham on Friday ended Gordon’s four-year streak of topping Long Beach qualifying dating back to 2021. His best time was 1:43.489, nearly a second quicker than Gordon or his son Max.
It is Brabham’s 23rd fastest qualifer and second at Long Beach, having previously done so in 2017.
2024 Race #2 winner Myles Cheek was fourth ahead of Cole Potts. Potts, returning to the series after five years away, had qualified seventh at his last time in Long Beach in 2019.
Trey Hernquist was followed by Arie Luyendyk Jr., Zoey Edenholm, and Bill Hynes.
David Bernstein rounded out the order. Although at the back, he had improved from when he was setting times slower than two minutes in 2023 and 2024.
“I have a little bit of a death wobble in the air which will get fixed and straightened out for tomorrow’s race and it’ll be on,” wrote Bernstein.
Two races will take place over the weekend, one on each day. Both events are scheduled for 4:30 PM, with Saturday’s being after IMSA and Sunday’s following IndyCar.
