The legendary Mercedes-Benz 500SLC that Albert Pfuhl raced in the 1984 Paris–Dakar Rally is at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, where it will participate in the Off-Road Arena with Ronan Chabot as the driver. Saga Classic, a vintage Mercedes restorer and dealer, prepped the car.

Chabot finished 25th overall at this year’s Dakar Rally in a Toyota Hilux; he’s raced Dakar almost annually since 2003, scoring a best finish of seventh in 2013 in an SMG (SMG is also at Goodwood with its 2015 2WD buggy). He and his navigator Gilles Pillot have done over a hundred rallies together, the latterhaving competed in 32 Dakars on both two and four wheels.

Of course, the 500 SLC is a bit of a different machine from what he’s used to.

Two Hugo Boss-sponsored 500 SLCs competed in the 1984 Dakar, the #155 piloted by Pfuhl with navigator Hans Schuller and the #154 of Jochen Mass and Stephen Perry. Mass was the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix winner and 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, finishing 62nd in his maiden Dakar. Pfuhl finished ahead of him in 44th overall.

Goodwood is celebrating rally raid at this year’s FOS. Others present include Ford and Toyota Gazoo Racing, João Monteiro, Gazelles Offroad Team205 Africa Raid, and Defender Rally.
